40 Personal Powerful Word of The Year Ideas

January 24, 20214 min read

Do you choose a focus word for the year? Until 2020 I set yearly goals without choosing a personal word for the year. However, I found that having one word for the year helped me focus on the goals I set for myself. There are many fantastic words to choose from, some of which I’ve listed below. Before reading the list, it is worth listing why a word of the year is powerful.

Choosing one word for the year helps you set an intention for the year. The word generally helps you stay focused and guides you in your daily activities. Your word of the year is a value that will serve you and help you achieve your goals and change your personal attributes.

The year may have started, but it is not too late to choose a word for the year.

How to choose one word to represent you this year?

Reflect on your past year.

First, reflect upon last year or the last 12 months if choosing your word part way through the year. Think about your personal growth. What went well, and what didn’t go so well? How have you changed over the 12 months?
If you keep a journal, flick through it. Are there words that you write about often?
The benefit of reviewing your past year is it highlights what is missing in your life and what you would like to strive for.

Your word of the year should be a word that will help you with personal growth in all areas of your life.

Write a list and narrow it down.

Write a list of words that mean something to you. A word for the year is a powerful word which has meaning to you and will help guide you throughout the year. There is no wrong word choice as we all lead different lives and have different goals and ambitions.
Your powerful word may be a word to help you reach a goal, or it may be a word you inspire to be. The choice is yours.

I personally don’t believe that a word should be plucked at random, but f you are struggling to find an inspirational word, here is a word generator which allocates you a word.

Use the power of visualisation.

Visualise your upcoming year. What do you want to achieve? Where would you like to be at the end of the year? What changes have you made in your life?
As you visualise your year, do you see how your word fits into all areas of your life?

In 2020 when I chose the word health, I looked at my wheel of life to see how the word could be implemented across my whole life. The word health is related to all eight areas of my life; business/career, relationships, family, health, financial, personal growth, spiritual and lifestyle.

Display your word.

Keep your chosen word in view. Write it down and place it where you can see it daily.
Write it on a Post-it note on your fridge.
Add the word to a photo and put it as a screen saver on your phone and computer.
Put the word into your vision board and display your vision board. You can see snippets of my vision board here.
Write about your word in your journal. Not journaling, read ‘how to start a personal journal.’ Journaling is an awesome tool to help you achieve your life goals.
